5 Signs Your Water Heater Is About to Fail (and What to Do)

June 28, 2026 4 min read

Most water heaters give you weeks of warning before they quit - if you know what to listen and look for. Catching the signs early is the difference between a planned same-day swap and a flooded utility closet on a Sunday night.

First: rusty or metallic-tasting hot water. If the cold tap runs clear but the hot tap is tinted, the tank's interior is corroding from the inside out. Once rust reaches the tank wall, a leak is not far behind.

Second: rumbling or popping noises. That is sediment hardening on the bottom of the tank, forcing the burner to work harder and overheat the steel above it. A flush can buy time; a decade-old tank that rumbles is usually near the end.

Third: water pooling around the base. Any moisture at the bottom of the tank means call us the same day - a slow weep becomes a burst seam without warning.

Fourth: lukewarm water that never gets hot, and fifth: an age past 10–12 years. If you are seeing two or more of these, book an inspection before the tank picks the worst possible moment. We stock every major brand and can usually swap a failing unit the same afternoon.
