Why Your Drain Keeps Clogging - and the Fix That Actually Lasts

June 12, 2026 5 min read

A drain that clogs, clears, and clogs again is telling you something a plunger can't fix. The blockage keeps reforming because something further down the line is catching debris - and until that anchor point is gone, you are just rearranging the problem.

In older Philadelphia rowhomes, the usual culprits are grease that has cooled and hardened into a shelf inside the pipe, or tree roots that have found a hairline crack in a clay sewer lateral and moved in for good.

Chemical drain cleaners make it worse. They eat at the pipe, rarely reach a full grease shelf, and leave a caustic slurry that a plumber then has to work around. Skip them.

The lasting fix is hydro-jetting: a high-pressure stream that scours the pipe wall back to bare metal or PVC, followed by a camera pass so you can see the line is actually clear - not just flowing again for a week.

If you have cleared the same drain more than twice this year, that is the signal to have the line jetted and scoped once. It costs less than a season of repeat visits, and we show you the before-and-after on the camera screen.
